Humane Society Rescues 100 Cats
Lancaster Eagle Gazette by Morgan Day

NEWS - November 9, 2010
LANCASTER -- A weekend rescue of 100 cats means Fairfield Area Humane Society members will be scrambling to get them adopted.
Executive Director Corey Schoonover said he and several others spent all day Sunday removing the cats from a two-bedroom Lancaster apartment.
The owner was a cat rescuer and had a medical issue that caused her to be hospitalized Saturday. That's when police discovered the apartment teeming with cats, he said.
"It's imperative that we get them adopted as soon as possible," Schoonover said. "One, we don't have the space for that kind of number, and two, the longer we have them the more cost is involved. Being a small nonprofit, we depend on the community to help us in these situations."
The woman's family members took seven cats, leaving 93. Those cats are in the Fairfield County Dog Shelter garage until Schoonover finds another location.
Fairfield County Commissioner Judy Shupe said the dog shelter is not legally allowed to accept cats; however, in an emergency situation involving health and public safety it has happened elsewhere, she said.
The cats were not taken into the shelter itself, and the shelter by law cannot change its policy and accept cats in the future, she added.
The dog shelter, which is not affiliated with the Humane Society, is a government agency that operates on money from licensures, adoptions and redemptions.
Schoonover expressed his gratitude to the Fairfield County Dog Shelter for assisting the Humane Society. He said he is looking for another temporary location to keep the animals.
The Humane Society does not yet have ownership of the cats but is working with their owner so she can surrender them. He added he does not intend to pursue criminal charges against the woman.
He said the animals are in good health, and the woman often took in sick animals to have them treated.
"For the most part they were all healthy," Schoonover said. "She already had them all spayed and neutered."
He urges all pet owners to spay and neuter their animals, saying the woman likely took in too many animals because other pet owners did not spay and neuter their own.
"It's definitely a tragic thing," Schoonover said. "It was someone trying to do the right thing. She had a big heart and just got in over her head.
"It leads back to why it's important to get their animals spayed and neutered. She was basically taking in sick and injured animals because pet owners didn't want to deal with their animals anymore."

Fairfield Area Humane Society head behind bars -- for a cause
Lancaster Eagle Gazette by Morgan Day

NEWS - October 26, 2010
LANCASTER -- Corey Schoonover is putting himself in the place of those he oversees -- straight into a dog kennel. The executive director of the Fairfield Area Humane Society offered to be locked in a kennel, starting at 3 p.m. Friday, until he raises $5,000 or spurs 20 pet adoptions. It's all part of a fundraising effort called Caged for a Cause.

"I'm prepared to stay in there a couple nights, but I would love to get out of there by the end of the weekend," said Schoonover, who took over the position about four months ago.

Schoonover said he will leave for bathroom breaks, but otherwise he's staying put in the kennel.

He plans to not only raise money but awareness about the private, nonprofit agency. He said community members often don't know the Humane Society runs strictly on donations and is not affiliated with the nearby Fairfield County Dog Shelter.

He said the $5,000 likely will go toward the animals' veterinarian bills. He said all animals adopted out are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and given microchips.

"When you get an animal from us, it's something you don't have to take to the vet and spend $200-$300 on," he said.

The $5,000 could pay for about 50 animals' vet bills.

Carnival Foods owner Dan Bay said he was eager to help out with the "unique" fundraiser.

"I think everybody will get a kick out of it, really," he said, adding he will help Schoonover keep warm and comfy with hot coffee.

"I just hope that there's plenty of people showing up so he doesn't have to stay out there very long," he said. "And I hope the adoption of some animals works out well, too."
